One of the world’s oldest yard games, bocce ball is easy for people of nearly all ages to pick up and enjoy. Bocce ball equipment consists of just eight large balls, called bocce balls, and one small target ball known as a jack or pallino. The game is played in both small and large groups of anywhere from two to eight people. These players are divided into two teams and each player has the opportunity to throw an equal number of bocce balls. For instance, when played between two individuals, each person throws four balls. Meanwhile, in groups of eight, each player throws one ball.

To start the game, the first player tosses the pallino to set the target for that game. To be valid, the toss must leave the pallino behind the centerline of the court. Afterwards, the same player bowls a bocce ball and attempts to get the ball as close to the target as possible. Players subsequently take turns tossing their bocce balls until all the balls have been thrown. The team with the bocce ball closest to the pallino scores a point for that frame. However, teams may score multiple points for each ball that is closer to the pallino than the opposing team’s.

Once scoring is completing, the board is reset and players follow the same process of tossing in the pallino followed by all the bocce balls. This continues until one team scores 13 points, thus winning the game.
